Accident Insurance - Protected when the unexpected happens

Financial support when an accident disrupts everyday life.

Accidents can happen anywhere, at work, at home, while exercising or simply going about your day.

A broken bone, serious injury or hospital stay can affect more than your health. You may need time away from work, help at home, additional childcare or support while you recover.

Accident and hospitalisation cover can provide a cash payment following certain injuries or insured events. The money is paid directly to you and can be used wherever it is needed most.

How could the payment help?

Any payment you receive can be used in the way that helps you most. This could include:

  • Replacing some lost or reduced income
  • Paying household bills or mortgage commitments
  • Covering childcare or other caring responsibilities
  • Paying for travel to medical appointments
  • Arranging help around your home or garden
  • Supporting your rehabilitation and recovery

It is important to understand that this cover is not the same as income protection. It provides set payments for specified injuries and events rather than a regular replacement income.

What can accident cover include?

Depending on the policy and level of protection selected, cover may provide a payment for:

  • Major and minor broken bones
  • Certain permanent injuries caused by an accident
  • Total permanent disablement following an accident
  • Each complete 24-hour period spent as an inpatient in a UK hospital following an accident
  • Hospital stays caused by sickness after an initial qualifying period
  • Accidental death
  • A limited payment following death from non-accidental causes

The amount paid is based on the injury or event covered by the policy, rather than your actual financial loss.

Optional protection for your family

Some policies allow additional protection to be included for eligible children. Depending on the cover selected, this may provide payments following:

  • Broken bones
  • Hospital stays
  • Certain permanent injuries
  • Accidental death
  • Diagnosis of a specified form of cancer

This could provide valuable financial support if a parent or carer needs to take time away from work to look after a child.

Cover for active lifestyles

Additional cover may also be available for people who enjoy sport, exercise or other physical activities.

This can extend protection to certain serious dislocations, tendon ruptures and complete ligament tears caused by an accident, subject to the policy definitions and exclusions.

More than a payment

Selected policies may also include access to additional services such as:

  • Virtual GP appointments
  • Remote physiotherapy
  • Wellbeing and emotional support
  • Practical health and lifestyle resources

These services can be useful even if you never need to make an insurance claim.

Is accident insurance worth considering?

Accident cover may be particularly relevant if you:

  • Are self-employed or receive limited sick pay
  • Have little in accessible savings
  • Rely heavily on your monthly income
  • Have children or other people who depend on you
  • Take part in sport or physical activities
  • Work in a practical or physically demanding occupation
  • Would find an unexpected period away from work difficult to manage financially

Finding the right level of cover

Accident and hospitalisation policies can usually be tailored by selecting different levels of protection and adding optional benefits where appropriate.

At RH Mortgage & Financial Solutions, we will explain what is covered, what is not covered and how the policy could fit alongside any life insurance, critical illness cover or income protection you already have.

Terms, conditions, benefit limits, qualifying periods and exclusions apply. Cover only pays for the injuries and events defined in the policy. Hospitalisation benefits may be restricted to UK hospitals, and sickness-related hospital stays may not be covered during the initial qualifying period.
